These picture books will help my students safely immerse themselves into new realities. Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop explains that books present, "mirrors, windows and sliding glass doors". Our students need to see themselves, meet others and walk into the spaces they imagine as readers.
These titles are award winning books and best sellers for children. Many of the listed books received recent awards to celebrate diversity in children's literature. I know my students will identify with the themes emphasized by the Dolly Gray Children's Literature Award to represent people with disabilities as well as the Coretta Scott King Award for appreciation of African-American culture and universal human values.
I will read these books aloud during the year to create background knowledge, teach standards, enrich lessons and share hope. These books will also be available for students to read in class or borrow to share at home with family.
