A little backstory for me - I grew up in a predominately white, middle-class environment, being one of the few people of color in my school. Wanting to feel like you belong in the place that you go to every single day, is something everyone longs for, no matter their race, identity, etc. That's what I wanted. Now, as I teach students from many different backgrounds, I see a glimmer of myself in them. Flashing back to when I was there age, wanting to feel belonging. In this little way, these books will promote inclusiveness in my classroom. In this little way, students may relate to characters in the book and be assured that they are important, valued, unique, BEAUTIFUL! In this little way, students may LEARN and start a path in their life that wants to include people who are different than they are because they have a new-developed passion for that. I think that if there are more books in my classroom that students can either relate to or be intrigued by because they want to learn, it's going to be the start of something wonderful.
