Having their own math materials will ensure that I can continue to provide high quality instruction in the time of social distancing. This will enable each student to have their own materials ensuring that they will stay healthy AND continue the necessary deep understanding of place value and basic number sense. This is something that many of my second graders struggle with and are not able to understand abstractly. Having the materials available for them to manipulate will increase their understanding and ensure they truly understand and have the necessary foundation for subsequent math concepts.
They need to have individual materials to aid in their understanding of place value. I have found materials that I feel would work well to help them in this stage of their learning regarding 1's, 10's, 100's, and 1,000's. These are individual packs which would be much easier to clean when we return to school post covid-19 pandemic. This would ensure all students have their own materials, limiting community sharing and keeping students healthier.
