Students will read the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. The story chronicles how a young girl changes her community by initiating one small action. Students will use this book as a means by which to spark their excitement and interest in changing their own communities. Throughout the unit, students will read the book, write their own personal chapters of the book to continue the story. They will later create a community garden as a means by which to continue the work of the young girl they read about in the novel.
Each student will get a copy of the book that they will use either at home and in the classroom (assuming they will have access to in person learning). Students will be taught to annotate the text for a more robust and interactive experience with the novel. Upon completion of the text, students will keep the book for their on personal libraries.
