I teach students who exhibit a variety of learning disabilities, social challenges, and/or behavioral concerns. They require motivation as they attempt to overcome unique social and academic challenges. Many of the students who are in the special education program are classified as economically disadvantaged.
Snacks and school supplies are the foundation of my PBIS program called "I Can…". My students often feel defeated, shy away from social and academic situations, and are hungry before the end of the school day. They strive to do their best academically and socially, and want to be accepted, recognized, and rewarded for their hard work. Incentives are vital in keeping them positively engaged and on-task while learning challenging concepts, as well as positively engaged in social situations.
This program is especially important this year due to the COVID pandemic. Students' challenges to be motivated academically and socially have increased since they have not had the opportunity to be physically in the school building. Should the school building be closed, the I Can…. Program will continue virtually with me bringing rewards to them. It would be great for them to receive rewards in addition to their school work.
