Read aloud is an integral part of our day. Not only do my students love reading novels, but we also read a picture book each day for the pure enjoyment of reading, known as Classroom Book-A-Day. This occurs each morning while gathered on the rug. Some books are light and funny, making us laugh out loud, while others are more thought-provoking, dealing with themes that teach important life lessons. In the 2 years I have been participating in Classroom Book-A-Day, students have commented that this is their favorite part of the day. This helps to build community within our classroom while also giving us multiple common texts to reference when learning new language arts concepts. Due to social distancing, students will no longer be able to gather around me on the rug to see the picture books closely (some of our books are wordless picture books that readers rely solely on illustrations to interpret the story). This document camera will help my students experience these fantastic books as if they are right next to me.
