When schools went online last spring, students were spending hours parked in front of a screen every day. Many struggled to obtain adequate internet access. Additionally, with the internet comes the distractions it is fraught with: pop-up ads, hyperlinks, notifications, and the like. Research has also shown that reading from books slows students down, allowing for more time to think critically and absorb detail. For these reasons, and for the crucial task of keeping a relevant, inclusive collection of texts with which my students can interact, I'm seeking hard copies of the novel Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward. Its beautiful, complex writing was awarded the National Book Award (she's the first woman to win the award twice), and it features necessary stories with diverse characters that will both allow for complex literary analysis and the chance to build empathy and broaden world views. Please help provide my students the opportunity to interact with meaningful contemporary texts!
