My 2nd graders have LOVED having a class pet. Our red eared slider, "Lilly Tator Tot" is about to be one year old and her 10 gallon aquarium is too small for her. My project is to help us get a 20 gallon tank so she has room to grow and stay in my classroom for years to come.
Having a class pet has taught my students a lot about responsibility and respect for all living things and how their actions can affect others. They all look forward to the day that it is their turn to feed the turtle. Having a class pet has really strengthened the sense of community and family in our classroom. There are so many ways to use the class pet for learning experiences. 2nd graders love to learn about science and animals but I have also used our turtle for math in a measurement lesson where students estimated the size and weight of our turtle. We've used Lilly in writing lessons as well. I'm sure I will come up with more ways to use our pet in the future.
Thank you so much for helping my students (and Lilly)!
