Due to the nature of my classroom, we utilize incentives throughout our day to motivate participation. For example, I would pass out a Jolly Rancher every time a student volunteered to read aloud or answer an academic question. In my classroom, we would also track daily behavior points to determine their color level (color=classroom privileges) and pass out classroom bucks. At the end of the day, the students would be able to buy from the end-of-the-day reward box. On Fridays, the students would be able to shop from the student store, which is full of snacks and small toys; however, it depended on their color level. So, they have to work to earn their incentives and rewards. My students still require these special incentives and rewards especially during distance learning. My students are stuck at home with absent parents or parents who are too busy working 2 jobs to be physically/emotionally available for their children, so they thrive on positive reinforcements and rewards for working independently. It gives them something to look forward to and motivates them to keep their eye on the prize during these difficult times. They have enough things to worry about at home...this may be the only highlight of their week, month, or year.
