Due to the cultural climate taking place throughout Minnesota at this time, I want celebrate the many gifts diversity brings to my Kindergarten classroom by honoring who my students are and where they are from. One way to do is by incorporating diverse literature in our classroom library while connecting them to social and emotional learning. I want my students to see themselves in the texts in our classroom and be able to accept differences among all people.
My classroom is full of diverse children who come from various backgrounds. Many of our current read-aloud books lack diverse characters or involve animals as the main characters. For students to be able to connect, relate, and apply what they learn to their own lives, they need to see characters like themselves and hear story plots that are similar to their own lives in order to feel valued, validated, and affirmed.
