Diversity in the media, including children's books, is severely lacking. I want to introduce more books with diverse characters, written by diverse authors, into my classroom library. All of my students should be able to see themselves represented in the books they are reading.
In 2018, a study of 3,134 books found that approximately 77% of children's books featured main characters that were either White or animals. All other minorities combined made up the other 23%. For this reason, I have compiled a collection of picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels with a variety of non-white characters, including children who have disabilities or are non-binary. I'm looking forward to sharing these books with my students in the fall, whether in person or through distance learning!
