I have used flexible seating in my classroom for a few years. The students are able to be in control of their learning by choosing the sit where they are comfortable in the classroom. Each year the students help to create the rules for using flexible seating and sign a contract that they know and will follow the rules. This ownership motivates them to make good choices in the classroom. This motivation carries over into their academic achievement.
When students are comfortable I have noticed less classroom management issues and more academic engagement from students. This year is a more challenging year to provide this flexibility to my students. We also may be spending more time in the classroom this year and these mats would provide a space for students to relax and do classroom yoga when a brain break is needed. These mats will serve are an independent space for each student to learn and grow in my classroom while keeping them safe and healthy.
