There are 4 basic elements to all music: Harmony, Melody, Form, and Rhythm. To be an informed musician, even if casually, it is good to have a basic understanding of all four of these elements.
Using bucket drumming is a fun and effective method for teaching the fundamental concepts of rhythm. This method has been found to be an effective educational tool in students as young as 9 years old.
With the outbreak of Covid-19, recent discoveries have indicated that "the act of singing may contribute to transmission of COVID-19, possibly through emission of aerosols." {Source: NPR.org}. Therefore, because my district has chosen to return to in-person learning, a decision I fully support, it is up to me as a music education professional to invent creative ways, other than singing, for my students to learn important musical concepts.
Students will participate in daily rhythm activities lead by me. Using the provided 5 gallon buckets; and drum sticks, each student will learn, practice and perform basic rhythms increasing in difficulty; and most importantly, each student will have his/her own bucket and set of drum sticks; thus minimizing contamination.
