When kids come to see the school counselor, they need comfort of all types. They need emotional support, and they need a comfortable physical setting to feel safe and secure to share in. Many of these comforts have been taken away during the COVID pandemic.
Our kids are returning to school face to face soon, and everything is different. There is a lot of support needed to address their fears and concerns, changes to their lifestyles, and potential trauma and loss during this time. One thing that has changed in school is the physical setting. Everything needs to be easily and immediately cleanable. No more pillows for kids, no more cloth, no more cushions.
As the school counselor, I am ready to resume seeing all of the students in my school. I see kids individually and in small groups for deeper mental health support through all of these hardships. But my room is missing a lot of the comfort it used to have with new cleaning restrictions, leaving behind only their regular desk chairs. Adding yoga balls, stools, inflatable seats, or a circle spots on the ground gives them choices for determining where they feel safe and how they want to sit while being easily cleanable.
This project will support kids having choices in a safe and comforting environment when they are most in need of comfort - working with the counselor about their fears, concerns, or challenges they are facing.
