I am requesting multiple copies of novels to take my students beyond the walls of our classroom as we explore the joy of reading! Not many of my students have experienced the joy of reading a book that totally absorbs them, one that they are not able to put down until they have read the whole thing, cover to cover. That's what I want for my students. I want them to know the LOVE of reading, to escape from where they are to an exciting new place, to experience the possibilities that a good book offers.
These books are engaging and relevant, and will provide a stimulus for meaningful class discussions during our Meets. Because they are exciting and applicable to the students, each of these books will be a catalyst to an in-depth book study that will last over an extended period of weeks, as we talk about such things as the story elements, predicting outcomes, making inferences, author’s purpose, and other components of the stories. Most importantly, we will discuss their own choices and what they might have done in the same circumstances as the characters in the novels. These books will become wonderful reflective tools.
During this time of virtual learning at home, it is more important than ever that my students have novels physically in their hands AT HOME. Not all of them have dependable internet access. Among the most important benefits of reading are mental stimulation, vocabulary building, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus and concentration, and better writing skills. Students who read for pleasure are more likely to do well in school, and will carry those skills forward into life.
