I am a teacher on special assignment, which means I travel to other classrooms all day, and then teach my own group of students for reading intervention after school. Because I do not have a rostered class, I receive no budget, despite needing many of the same materials as traditional classroom teachers. The students that come to my room struggle greatly with reading, and stay an extra hour after school to get more practice in phonics and phonemic awareness. When we need supplies, like flash cards, this comes out of my own wallet. When we need to sharpen pencils, I have to go to a class next door and ask to borrow it! I’m hoping we can get some basic supplies to keep the program going and also motivate the students to continue putting in the hard work after school.
