I am a 1st-year Special Education Teacher who is trying to set up my classroom. There is not a lot of items in the class. The previous teacher pretty much cleaned it out.
I am a firm believer that no one learns in the same way. So to expect all students to be able to learn while sitting, in the same way, is unacceptable to me. I want to create my classroom with Flexible seating so that the students will be able to choose the type of seating that best allows them to focus. If the student has the type of seating that makes them comfortable, then they won't have to worry about how they are feeling which allows them to focus on their studies better. I have also included a standing dest because there may be times someone may choose to listen while standing. Seating all the time has also been proven to be unhealthy. I want a couple of wobble seats because they encourage the user to sit correctly and more upright. They also increase concentration.
I want to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom because children need to move. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean, or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused.
