I know to begin the year my students will have a minimum six weeks of distance learning. They will not have the advantage of "going" to school in a classroom filled with exploration. They will be using materials they have at home that don't feel like school. The families are from different socio-economic backgrounds and offer different opportunities. Some have a multitude of toys at home, but at school we learn with "tools". Some will not have creative learning tools at their disposal and their families can not afford to furnish them.
To balance the missed opportunity of beginning that important kindergarten learning experience in a manipulative-rich classroom that promotes math and literacy, surrounded by their peers and future friends, I would like to supply them with these Literacy & Math Kits that will transfer "school" to their homes and put them on a more level playing field! The math and literacy tools and manipulatives will create a rich Literacy & Math Kit for each student to have at home.
When, and if, they are able to come into the classroom, they will have these kits to bring with them; allowing them to transfer into a learning environment with tools they are familiar with. Each student will be bringing these kits they have grown to have ownership of into the classroom. They will not lose time in the classroom “learning” about what tools are available. As well, parents can be rest assured that their child will have individualized manipulatives to use in the classroom.
