This year I will be venturing into uncharted territory as I enter kindergarten, after teaching third grade, and we will start the year in distance learning. While it feels scary, I believe learning at home is the safest option for our community and I have an opportunity to build a deep home-to-school connection with my students. Many students come into school as funds of knowledge but are not given enough opportunities to share their knowledge, or their experiences aren't valued. This is often a result because many students' experiences and bits of knowledge are not accepted or acknowledged in mainstream education. My school's demographics are 90 percent Latinx, 5 percent Black, and 5 percent are Asian. Through art, family storytelling, books, and community building I hope to use my students' experiences to power our learning.
