At the beginning of the 17-18 school year the demographics of my school drastically changed after redistricting occurred allowing former students to attend a new elementary school. My school population went from 65% African American to 70% Hispanic. This caused many issues to be overlooked or misunderstood due to language barriers. As the Social Worker I tried my best to help all of my students. However I’ve always felt there was more I could do.
Mindfulness is the psychological process of purposely bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment without judgment, which one develops through the practice of meditation. The materials listed will help me bridge that language gap between myself and my students.
We will use the mindfulness books as well as stress balls and journals to center ourselves before we address any issues. These items will help to calm students down and allow them to effectively communicate what problems they are having. The bilingual books will aid the students in communicating with me so that all parties can feel heard and understood, thus closing the language barrier gap.
