Typically students see language as a necessary evil in high school studies, not something enjoyable. If the language is your heritage language, the excitement to learn it and actively engage in it is usually not there. Having access to the Scholastic Spanish language magazines: Qué tal, Ahora, and/or El Sol would help the students to see their culture from an outsider´s perspective. The cultural appreciation that is sometimes taken for granted can be highlighted with these magazines as they tend to highlight different areas of the Hispanic world that they may NOT be familiar with and this, in turn, would shine a light on their respective cultures.
The Brain Pop platform would further shine a light on cultural appreciation; the students would be able to compare and contrast their traditions with those highlighted on the platform as they did with those in the magazines. I think that being able to access the digital copies of the magazines will also create meaningful opportunities for students to interact with their families. These conversations prompted by activities from Brain Pop and Scholastic magazines will help bring the world to the students' homes and in turn, open up conversations in the classroom. For the language learner, appreciating the language AND the culture is what all teachers want to instill in their students.
