All students can benefit from learning about mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. During the transition back to the 2020-2021 the school community anticipates an increase in both depression and anxiety. A small group of students will need extra specific support to manage, regulate and cope with new developing emotions. School personnel are often the first notice and identify changes to student behavior. Teacher-student relationships are often supportive and provide confidence about things that are uncomfortable or bothersome to teens. Teachers provide school social workers with the students that need the most support surrounding their mental health.
The school social worker will offer two separate social-emotional groups, one for anxiety & another for depression, two times a year for 9th-12th graders. The groups will utilize either face to face or virtual meet with the support of self help books directed at teenagers. Additionally, activities will be taught along with information learned from self- help text. Students will be encouraged to journal in coordination with the group content.
