My high school is located in a rural area with a high level of poverty, and our school building is old and deteriorating. My students, many of whom come from difficult backgrounds, come to school to learn and improve themselves, but the rapidly declining comfort of the environment can be discouraging and even prohibitive to students who are trying to think and grow.
A comfortable and welcoming classroom can help with student motivation and self-efficacy. My students deserve to feel that their school is a comfortable and functional place. It’s hard to feel a sense of confidence or accomplishment when the room that you’re in is in complete disrepair. The more effort I have put into making my classroom a pleasing environment, the more improvement I have seen in my students’ attitudes toward my class; they are much more willing to put in hard work and engage in critical thinking when the classroom environment is comfortable and pleasing.
Unfortunately, there is only so much work I can do to improve my room with my limited resources and abilities. With your help, I will be able to combat the harsh fluorescent lighting using magnetic light covers that will dim the light and give it a tranquil blue hue. This will make my students more comfortable, especially while reading from textbooks and computer screens.
