Hands-on learning is particularly important for young children, as this is how they are programmed to learn. Teaching this way is critically important, but this year because of precautions that we need to take to prevent the spread of Covid 19, students will not be able to share materials. I will use donated items to create individual boxes with art materials, sensory items and manipulatives that students can use in class or if needed take home for on-line learning.
Exploring different tactile materials like sand, water, paint, dough, and math manipulatives encourages language skills, fine motor development and math skills like counting, comparing and classification.
So much will be different about how I teach this year. One thing I can't compromise on is giving these young children the materials they need for rich and engaging hands-on learning experiences.
