My students want to learn Spanish, but I must continue engaging them in order for them to become life-long users of the language which is the goal. Or, at least develop an interest in or awareness of the Spanish culture. El Sol magazine provides interesting and teen friendly resources such as articles, images, audio, video, practice activities, extra content online, glossaries and answer keys. In addition, the content and practice activities incorporate the 5 C's: critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration and citizenship skills.
Students don't want to read from a 20-year-old textbook using outdated content and imaginary characters that don't connect with them. They want to read about real current events or traditions in the Spanish-speaking world. They are interested in the heroes and celebrities of cultures different than their own. They want to listen to authentic text spoken by native speakers so that they may improve their own pronunciation and accent. They want to watch videos of relevant content in the culture they are studying. El Sol magazine provides all these opportunities.
This magazine subscription can be used in a face to face classroom or at home. At school we will use the paper copy and at home, we will access it online. My students all have their own devices. It also includes comprehension questions to check for understanding as well as speaking and writing prompts which can be used in the classroom but also virtually with a web tool such as Flipgrid or our own learning management system. Another great thing about this magazine too is that it contains content from a variety of themes such as sports, politics, festivals, health, sea life, etc. Therefore, a student can choose the article, video, audio or activity that most interests him/her!!
