The flash-drives are vital because many of my students are using borrowed, frozen Chromebooks or laptops. They don't have a way to "keep" their work that isn't online - and trying to save multiple files and download and upload them daily drains away up to a half hour of each instructional time-block we have during distance learning. Often, pre-pandemic, multiple student would rely on one flashdrive that was kept at the front of my classroom. That isn't an option anymore, sadly.
The engineering notebook is an industry standard, plus helps them keep all their work in one space, bound together, and with graph paper for ease of incorporating sketches, ideas, writing, and math. They will take photos of their work or scan them to turn in, and get used to the standards of documentation that is used in engineering careers.
To get them used to spatial reasoning, we often use these linking cubes in the classroom: this will allow the students to have some at home to follow along with the lessons and to be able to physically understand instead of trying to see it just through a computer screen. These will build there spatial reasoning and understanding, which links to their understanding as they progress to learning about different types of engineering and building.
