My classroom is bustling with discussions, experiments, storytelling, station rotations, and brain breaks! However, during some parts of the day, students are given time to engage in independent reading. Students need to have flexible seating choices so that they can find a place in the classroom where they feel comfortable. A relaxed body can help them reach their best level of focus. It is even more essential that the classroom library reflects the cultures and experiences of my students to build more authentic connections to text.
Having different seating options and culturally relevant books will allow me to provide a better sense of support and community for my students as not only readers but as young people learning the value in being proud of oneself and their background.
Students will be able to choose from different seating options that give more choice outside of their usual desk area. Given the type of seating being requested, students will be able to easily move their seat of choice to a spot in the room where they feel most cozy. When students are excited to read, they grow as readers and strengthen their abilities in other academic areas as well. Success and growth is the ultimate goal, but it starts with creating a safe space.
