When I meet my Art I and II students in a Zoom meeting on the first day of class, I will introduce them to my art studio. We will discuss the value of creating a special place and space for them to create art. For some it might be a table, and others it will be a tiny corner on the floor of their apartment. All of these spaces are valued and valuable.
These materials will be used to create 180 art kits for every art student to use in their personal art studio. Due to the Pandemic we are starting school 100% online. It is essential that I provide each student with their own supplies so they all have equal access to the curriculum. And when we return to school, these kits will continue to be used to create safe and sanitized work stations.
For many students, these art supplies will be the first time they have held a drawing pencil, learned how to layer colored pencil and watercolor, or create their own personal sketchbook that reflects their voice. These donations will provide and equitable arts education for all of my 9th-12th grade students.
