Rudine Sims Bishop shared that books can be windows, glass doors, and mirrors. As windows, books offer views of real or imagined worlds. Books can be sliding glass doors that allow readers to walk through new worlds. And finally, books can be mirrors and reflect the reader through shared experiences and familiar characters.
Students need access to a variety of novels that not only echo their worlds but that share the worlds and experiences of others. Community and empathy are built by stories. Books have the power to bridge cultures, foster understanding, and change lives.
