Many of these children have never had a book of their own, especially those just coming into Kindergarten. Some of the titles being purchased will be mirrored in read-alouds through our library web page allowing students to follow along in their books, while I read the book to them.
I will stop and ask questions leading them to think about the characters, the plot, and the conclusion. We can talk about what they would do, if they would act like the character or will they make a different choice. Showing them that the books give them the chance to dream or think about the future or issues, will help them to develop a love for reading.
