My school district hasn’t invested in new social studies resources in over a decade. While the information in those books may not have changes, the stories included and the way they are told has. Our social studies class will integrate traditional textbooks, excerpts from these books, current events, and multimedia resources to create a more complete understanding of the history of the United States.
My students will no longer wonder why we are learning about ‘dead white guys’ as these books help them see their stories in our country’s history. They also help us see where our current struggles come from, and with this understanding, it is my hope that they can help us move our country forward to fulfill its promise of ‘liberty and justice for ALL.’
