Our first grade team will be using these books to teach our literacy, social studies science and math content through distance learning this school year. Research states students are more engaged in learning when they see themselves represented in their literature. We have intentionally selected books with protagonists of groups who are typically under represented in children's literature, such as girls/women and Black Indigenous People of color among others.
As teachers, we're not always provided with literature that represents the students we teach, so we are thrilled to be curating this collection of books that better represent our student body. We are ordering multiple copies of the books so that we can co-plan units as a first grade team. We plan to use these books to shape and inform our instruction. We will use them in read-alouds and to enhance our literacy and other curriculum and foster rich, whole-class discussions.
