Surrounded by the uncertainty and turmoil of the global pandemic, students need, now more than ever, tools that will help them to navigate the world around them. Books are the exact tools that students need.
Although our classroom library contains both popular and classic text, my sixth grade students crave and constantly request relevant, high-interest book choices that address the complicated issues that they come face-to-face with on a daily basis: sickness, bullying, racial/cultural/gender injustice, self-esteem, addiction, incarceration, death, homelessness, hunger, divorce, and abuse. The addition of diverse book choices to our classroom library will provide students with the opportunity to see themselves, as well as the lives and viewpoints of others, in the literature that they read. In turn, they will learn to cope, to understand, to open their hearts, to broaden their minds, to better communicate their thoughts, and to expand their LOVE OF READING.
