Students will first measure the fabric and cut, two 1 1/2 yard pieces. They will need to work collaboratively to follow written and visual directions to overlap the fabric pieces and learn to cut and then tie knots, securing all sides of the blankets. This collaborative project will allow students to share their strengths, encourage helping one another, build fine motor skills and teamwork. Students will need to work in trios, to finish each blanket allowing for great opportunities to build social emotional, communication and collaboration skills. 3/4 of the students in the class receive speech and language services as well; this project will encourage informal communication, and communication to solve a problem.
Tie Blankets and Books for Families, will encourage students to communicate, collaborate with one another to accomplish a finished project, provide life skills training in math measurement, following directions, knot tying and working together as part of a team. Many of my students' families do not have books at home, or access to the public library. Currently at our school, children are only allowed to take home 2-3 books from the school library. This project would also provide 1-2 paper back books to read at home over the winter holidays, so the students have books of their own.
