In your packets I asked you to fill out the animal species research sheet. You can research all your information on the computer on the animal of your choice. I also need you to complete the math practice exercises on Math plash by the end of the week. You'll receive 10 pts for that. A few of you have turned in your online ELA assignment through CommonLit but many more of you have not. I will give an extension till tomorrow so that you can go online and complete that.
Next, A mother emails me through DOJO and says, : Ms. Black, we don't have a computer in our house. An uncle reaches out to me and say, "I'm trying to get my niece a tablet but we also don't have internet connections here. So, I'm not sure if she will be able to do the online assignments or Zoom with you but I'll make sure she gets the packets done.
Not only do the children face barriers with computer access but they have barriers with affording to connect to the internet. This was my life from March-May. The kids could only do packets and this became boring to them. They missed out on many enriching learning opportunities because they lacked computer access. Those who had computers still struggled to navigate and sign up for some of the learning sites. Why? because they are more conditioned to use cellphones/tablets to text and play games versus using technology to locate critical information. However if they had equal access to computers during the school year before the crises they could have practiced learning how to locate information and logging on to sites etc.
Please make their dreams come true.. -Ms. Black- :)
