Starting 1st grade in front of a machine instead of a person is going to be a challenge for students, teachers and parents. Many of my students have a low-socioeconomic background and do not have the math materials that they will need to learn from home. Giving them manipulatives will dramatically help them be successful in navigating the curriculum. 1st graders need to explore with their hands. The 10 frames, counters, number lines and blocks will help them to understand the concepts behind adding; not to mention make math more fun and engaging. AND, there will be stickers…everyone loves stickers!
