Do you remember your favorite character from your favorite book growing up? Did they inspire you to go on grand adventures or you could see yourself in that character's shoes? Did they teach you a life lesson or inspire your career path? I want to give my students these same opportunities.
Not all of my students are represented in the "popular" books. They aren't making connections with the characters because they don't see themselves represented. Heros aren't always the prince riding to save the princess trapped in the tower. Heros can look like scientists, or your wise next door neighbor, or a friend.
I would love to get more diverse books for my classroom to inspire and promote diversity, equality and promote deep conversations.
