Book reading is a favorite activity in the speech room! We start each unit with a book. Then, we do various activities that target each of my students' specialized goals. We practice answering WH- questions (who, what, where, when), describing pictures, following directions, providing summaries, making inferences, predicting, and more! These are fundamental language skills that will be used across my students' educational careers and beyond. My students (and I!) look forward to picking a new book at the start of each unit.
It is my hope to provide my students with a set of books that reflect the diversity in our own classroom. I want my students to see their own experiences and interests reflected in these books, as well as the experiences and interests of their classmates. This diverse set of books will make the learning activities more relevant as well as ignite conversations about diversity and inclusivity.
