The most memorable moment that many people experience in their American Government class is watching School House Rock's "I'm Just a Bill." Not so in Mr. Taylor's American Government course, where students don't just watch media, they create it while learning how to actively participate in our democracy. Democracy increasingly takes place on the internet, on social media, and on TV, giving everyday citizens more opportunities to have their voices heard. If students are the future of our democracy, they will need to learn all the ways they can take part.
With your help, we can transform student cell phones into professional cameras with the addition of a classroom set of tripods, microphones, lighting, and lenses. With the ability to produce rich media content, students will be motivated to collaborate to create videos for projects such as voter registration drives, campaign ads, advocacy materials, news reports, mini-documentaries, and more.
Such an opportunity will create an amazingly rich learning experience for my students. While they are learning about the functions of government, they're also building the habits of an active citizen, learning how to research issues and advocate for their perspectives, collaborating with their peers, and developing media production skills all at the same time. Help develop the next generation of change-makers by supporting our project!
