Daily free choice, independent reading is foundational to our school community's ELA learning experiences in middle school and high school. Growing our classroom library supports students' independent reading experiences, which encourages their growth academically and socially emotionally.
Diverse, high quality, high interest texts encourage students to learn more about themselves and others while fostering the development of their literacy skills.
This project expands our classroom library selections with additional diverse authors and stories. When students see themselves in the books they are reading, this affirms their identities and helps them develop their self-awareness. When students read about people and places that differ from themselves, they have opportunities to see the world from others' perspectives, thereby deepening their understandings of others, and empathy for others.
