As part of a low-income community in Elizabeth New Jersey, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. In my school we practice the workshop model approach to teaching. In my class, I have students who are reading 2-3 years below grade level.
During the day there is a 90 minute literacy block which includes independent reading, writing and guided reading. During guided reading the teacher works with small groups that need help in the same area. This could be a help with comprehension or fluency or both. The children read short chapter books and picture books from our classroom library and currently digital versions from the curriculum. Students need access to their independent leveled text in order to build their stamina and comprehension.
What I would like to use during my guided reading small group sessions are short texts that are available from Reading A-Z.com. As well as have my students access a digital library of books on their independent reading levels that I can assign during remote learning for independent reading and to access after school hours. Their is a digital library of books and the teacher is given a guide with skills, strategies and mini-lessons to use with the children. The cost of this program is only $115.95 for the year and can be used with the whole class throughout the year. By using this program of guided reading I will be able to work extensively with small groups of children to help their reading skills and try to get them reading as close to grade level as possible.
