These books will allow my students to engage with a more accurate and inclusive version of United States History. In teaching such a diverse population it becomes clear that traditional textbooks do not offer history content that represents all of my students. This book will provide students with a more complete picture of history and includes more diverse perspectives.
Students are noticeably more engaged and feel a stronger sense of belonging when reading a book they feel represents their own history.
During distance learning due to COVID 19 students will spend hours staring at computer screens in order to attend their classes and complete asynchronous assignments. By providing a hard copy of this book it will allow students to take a break from the screen. Additionally, many of my students are working on devices that make it difficult for them to have more than one window open at a time. This means they will be unable to view a digital copy of the text while also remaining on the video call with the class. That is inequitable, and I want to do everything I can to make sure distance learning is as equitable for my students as possible.
