Equity is important in education. One element connecting the two is the social-emotional growth of the most vulnerable and important members of society 鈥 the youth. The impact of rejection and failure lasts a lifetime and affects every aspect of one鈥檚 life. As a teacher, I want to encourage and challenge my students to meet the challenge. I want to raise their growth mindset to feel good about the attempt, even if the result isn鈥檛 what they expected. And most importantly, I want to create an atmosphere that we all can try, and sometimes we fail, and that is ok.
I am creating a curriculum called 鈥淵ou Feel That Way, Too?鈥 Knowing that we are all in this together; allowing risks and mistakes without criticisms; educating students on the Growth Mindset; and finding constructive ways to deal with destructive feelings, such as alternative ways to cope with negative emotions and problem-solving with peers. I will also be conducting focused, team-building activities that create empathy and unity.
My long term goal is to create a positive atmosphere, where we are tolerant of different viewpoints, and have the skills to work out any conflicts to reach a constructive conclusion.
