I am a relatively new teacher, and as such, I haven't really built up a great library or collection of decorations for my classroom. So my project is all about creating a welcoming, inclusive, and empathy-driven space for my students to thrive. I'm still learning myself, and so I'm starting small. Books by diverse authors about diverse characters, posters that mirror the unique perspective of my students, and anchor charts to help them visually connect to the material we go over together. Urban schools are often underfunded, and students in these schools can find themselves in stale, sterile environments that make learning monotonous. I hope to make my room an exciting space that represents a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to encourage my students to become empathetic and successful world citizens.
