At the start of class every day, my students read a novel of their choosing. They desperately need to find one they will enjoy because if not, they will just continue to the cycle of selecting books to make their teacher happy and finding no value in reading. If I don't have enough high interest books on my shelves, they will just pick anything. Just the other day when my students were checking out books, a young man asked, "Don't you have any sports books?" I did have a few, but the class before had already checked them all out. I am teaching many more athletes and boys than I have before.
I noticed quickly that the novels on my shelves just don't meet their needs. Most of the novels I've chosen for this list have been selected with them in mind. I can't adequately describe the joy it gives me when my students find a book they love. It's almost as if a whole new world has opened up! Please help me encourage that love of reading with all of my students.
