My students are often underfed, and come to school on an empty stomach. They worry going home after school, not knowing whether they will have a decent dinner. When they are in class, and working hard, certain behaviors happen if their basic need of hunger is not satisfied. At school, my students are provided a breakfast and lunch, but by the time they are due to go home, they are hungry again. I have requested snacks because if my students receive a snack during their day, they work harder, they are in happier moods, and less negative behaviors occur in their school day. A happy belly helps feed a brain!
