Some of us are starting the year out online. Others of us will be coming in to the buildings. These items will provide students age-appropriate materials and safe places to engage with learning. Harsh lights, glaring windows, lab-white walls, soft computer speakers, are all distractions that many don't think about. When working with special needs students, we want to provide the most comfortable, safe, engaging atmosphere.
Middle school students are at an awesomely, delicate age between elementary-like wonder and trust and high school-independence. I want to make them feel like they are the adults they are becoming while allowing them to still utilize the child-like trust. Wallpaper, stickers, light covers, and extra loud speakers may all seem trivial, or maybe even pointless. These things allow the students to enter a calm environment where there is as little physical stress as possible, allowing students to focus on being the best version of themselves.
