One of our science kit units in 3rd grade is Earth Materials. This unit includes breaking rocks apart and examining their makeup. These Break Open Geodes Kits are superior hands-on kits that engage every student. Utilizing Bloom's Taxonomy, the students are asked to identify the properties of rocks, apply what they have learned, and sort them accordingly. They also learn about igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. At the end of this unit, students are asked to gather their own rock collections for our AWESOME end-of-the-unit rock show! 2nd graders are then invited to admire our collections while listening to my third graders teach them all about the life of a rock.
I know these kits will enhance my students' experience when we study geodes. This year we didn't have an opportunity to examine them in person. I plan to use these kits as an instructional tool to support the in-class learning. I can't wait to see their excitement!
