I am a speech-language pathologist in a DOE special education preschool in the Bronx, NY. My students are in special education classes and have various diagnoses such as autism and expressive and receptive language disorders. Many of my students have difficulty communicating verbally, and require other means to express their wants and needs. AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication and it includes all the ways a person communicates aside from talking. For example, a student can use a communication app on an iPad in order to communicate, so an iPad can serve as a great high-tech AAC device. The majority of my students come from low-income households and do not have access to many resources that can help them succeed in school.
