I have never taught a World Language class solely online. Initially, I doubted it could be done. Now, after having learned so much about virtual technology, I know that it can be, but one needs the right technology for the job. That is why I am excited by the Lupa app. It was developed to help World Language learners access authentic conversations and cultural materials of Latin America and to make them accessible to a wide variety of skill levels--from nearly native speakers to intermediate learners. With this app, students can slow down the speed of a native-speaker conversation; by pressing on a word in the app, the definition shows up in English; students can create their own vocabulary lists for words they are learning; and students can monitor how much time they are studying within the app. I will be able to monitor this as well and give them feedback about their progress. The Lupa interface is appealing, intuitive, and fun to use. It is a beautiful tool. I know it will make online learning so much more effective and enjoyable.
